UNDERCOVER X KAWS
Would have been cooler if it was made of porcelain and the bear’s head came off…. like a cookie jar.

On the cover of Lumas’ latest magazine:

Based on these artists and the many other experiences in his eventful and always independent life as a designer, actor, and author, Wolfgang Joop has developed a type of fashion drawing completely his own, in which “pose and personal demeanor become one.”
For him, art and fashion are most impressive when the objects have the spark of an old master, whom
he studied extensively, and possess “an aura of unintentionalness; or the intention to be completely
self-satisfied.”The French call this l’art pour l’art. Wolfgang Joop’s sketches are art for art’s sake.
“My sketches should look as though they emerged effortlessly. They explain my sense of time, my concept of beauty, with the most minimalist and yet self-assuredly effective means.”

Chloe Early aims “to reveal something about the gulf between the way we live and dream about living.”
Early’s latest series of work utilizes vibrant oils on canvas – although she is known for her progressive use of oil on alumnium as well – to layer contemporary subjects with transfressive states of reality, examining the myths of eternal illusiveness that blur the line between authenticity and prototype. Frequently, her characters gaze away from the viewer, creating a shift of perspective to provide a glimpse into the surrounding, fantastical landscape as if through someone else’s eyes. These figures – whether lone divers, herds of zebras or couples on holiday – always carry an air of oblivion while nevertheless hinting at conflicting themes of apocalypse and redemption. Evoking the glamour and escapism of a Fitzgerald novel, adds Early, “the characters seem to languish in a forgotten dream world of innocence, excess and desire haunted only by the possibility or knowledge that their dream will fragment.”
I can identify with that.

Today, I came across this stunning image while perusing the magazines at Barnes and Noble. It was on the cover of Lürzer’s Archive Specials – 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. This really smart image was created by Edel Rodriguez, a pretty talented Cuban guy.

Coming to auction in New York on May 12th is one of Jeff Koons’ Baroque Egg with Bow (in Magenta and Turquoise). It has a pre-sale estimate of 6 to 8 million USD. Despite recessionary times, I’m sure it will sell for more. Koons’ Celebration series continues to fascinate me.
