Matsui: Ten Don Combination w/ cold Soba for Life!

March 29, 2009 Gourmet 2 Comments

There was a point in my life when, for 3 months straight, I went to various Mishima  locations and ordered a small tofu salad and the Ten Don combination with cold soba. It was pretty extreme, I know, but it was my comfort food. =)

A couple of days ago, in the mood for some nostalgia, I stopped by Matsui (which used to be a Mishima branch. I honestly think it is much more improved with the new management and name)…

One of the main draws for me is the refreshing, iced-barley tea. I usually take a few sips while waiting for the food to arrive.

The tofu salad, which I wrote about before (link). In the old days, the dressing was already mixed into the bowl. I do like how today it comes on the side (probably due to calorie-counting folks’ repeated requests for it to be served that way). However, I still pour all of it in… because it is so good. I mix everything up to give the strips of lettuce and tomato slices a thorough coat of the dressing. So, so tasty.

Small Tofu Salad. Tomato, Cucumber, Seaweed, Lettuce, Bonito Flake, Tofu with Creamy Sesame Dressing

I appreciate the waiters’ attention in bringing the Ten Don Combination after I am completely finished with the salad.

Ten Don Combination. Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura, served over Rice topped with Special Sauce and my choice of Tanuki Soba.

Before digging in, I dump all of the green onion, radish, and wasabi glob condiments into the soba dipping sauce container and give the mixture a brief swirl with my chopsticks before pouring it all into the soba. Before attacking the soba, I remove the undissolved wasabi (for the sake of my nostrils, I can’t eat it all) from the bowl. I eat a bit of the noodles then move on to the rice, but coming back after every bite of tempura.

I’m pretty particular when it comes to eating tempura, usually starting with the vegetables and leaving the shiitake mushroom and prawn for last. =P

Fact: Did you know that tempura came from the Portuguese?

..but perfected by the Japanese….mMmmmmm…
